Meet Mason

Mason is 19 years old and lives at home with his youngest brother and his mom. He is severely impacted by autism, epilepsy and other developmental delays. Mason is completely non-verbal and communicates using proloque2go, PEC’s, pointing at objects and/or bringing you things. Over the years caregivers, teachers and his family and friends have heard a few words randomly spoken, but no words that he uses daily. He is very smart and he has a really good sense of humor if you are keen to pick up the non verbal communication. Mason’s laugh is contagious and he thrives when his environment and days are structured and set up for success. He requires 2 support staff at all times to meet his needs, he enjoys the outdoors, recreational activities and being involved in the community.

The Need

To provide a living space where individuals can live while their families continue to manage contracts for service providers through PDD funding venue - Family Managed Services.

Private individual units are designed with the work space of the staff separate to ensure that they are able to provide professional care to the client while in their home.

Bringing inclusive living, education, training and teaching together so that those who require 24/7 care can live to their fullest potential in the community.

Exceptional Housing for Exceptional People

Our vision plan is to build a housing structure:

  • A condominium-style complex suitable for people who are severely impacted by disabilities
  • All areas of the complex are wheelchair accessible
  • 36 apartments, 837 sq ft each with no stairs in the units and individual yards.
  • No kitchens in units for safety purposes
  • Bathrooms in the units are tiled floor to ceiling and designed for clients to have privacy and dignity.  A recessed cupboard in the wall with built in spray hose to sanitize the entire space.
  • Communal Kitchen and large cafeteria area designed to support clients in learning daily life skills.
  • Upper level (2nd floor) of the communal area is for education, teaching & training of the service and care providers as well as for the residents to access learning opportunities.
  • Office administration is upstairs along with a boardroom for collaborative community meetings.

Lukas

Time just moves along...
This is my story...
My son Lukas is smart, happy, fun & loves to be engaged. This now young man gives me a love I know I have never had. I love being his mom and wish that I could be with him all of his life; everyday a piece of my heart breaks that “the plan” for when I am gone is not in place.

Teammason2021 Foundation gives me hope and joy for his future; Lukas will have the support, interaction and opportunity to grow and be happy, fun and engaged.

Tanner

Tanner is 18 years old. His diagnosis of Autism and Epilepsy has created several challenges for him and his family to work through. He currently lives on an acreage with his siblings and parents where he spends most of his time. Tanner likes to go for rides either on the side-x-side, motorhome or in a vehicle, he likes to watch videos on his iPad and be involved with what is happening around him. His communication is limited to some yes/no responses, verbally spelling, some typed and physically showing those around him what he needs/wants.

Tanner is affected by his diagnoses as he has a restricted diet which is difficult to maintain without full support. Challenging behaviors can arise from changes that he cannot control such as sleep disruptions, which means he wakes up anywhere from4:30am to 6am. Tanner also requires assistance with his daily living skills as well as being monitored for his personal care. He doesn’t do well around others unless they have an established rapport with him and community access is an area we continue to work on as it can be unpredictable for all involved. Tanner adores his family as they adore him but it is also lots of work and above and beyond expected roles as his family dynamics are changing and siblings are growing up. A private home would be incredible for someone like Tanner because he would have some freedom with support and not overwhelmed with a group living situation.

Steve

Steve is 15 years old. He was diagnosed with severe autism when he was around 4years old. He spends most of his free time at home alone in his room or rocking in his favorite chair in the living room with his headphones and listening to music. He is super sweet, kind, and loving most of the time. He needs to be in a predictable, calm environment with someone who knows exactly how to speak to him or he has severe outbursts that result in property damage and severe self harm that would make living in a group home situation impossible for him. He loves to get out in the community but he requires one on one support with a trained care aid or one of his parents in order to have successful outings. I fear every single day what will happen to him when his father and I are no longer able to care for him. He is not able to live alone and could not be OK in any facility or living arrangement that they currently have available for people of his need. Teammason2021 Foundation is offering a very unique solution to a very unique problem and it gives me hope that one day my son will actually be OK to live without me. Somewhere he actually has his own home and a yard is a dream. As he gets closer to adult hood the reality is that he will never have the quality of life that he deserves with what is currently available.

Mico

Having a “Mico-proof place” would be beneficial to our family, as it would provide everyone with increased comfort and joy. Having a safe and comfortable environment tailored specifically for Mico would not only benefit him, but his support workers and family as well. Having support workers who are sensitive to his needs allows Mico to live a joyous life, and their jobs would be made simpler with the help of a properly structured home environment. Mico’s mood greatly impacts the individuals around him, so if he is happy so is everyone around him. Mico’s family greatly value his safety and pleasure, and believe that the plan to build a home for his needs would provide him just that.
